Introducing The Reading League’s Curriculum Navigation Reports
By: The Reading League | February 28, 2024
In the spring of 2024, The Reading League (TRL) will publish its Curriculum Navigation Reports on TRL Compass. We are excited to release our first set of reports on a select number of the most widely used reading curricula in the nation! An additional series of reviews will become available in 2025.
The TRL Curriculum Navigation Reports project has been in development for almost two years. Each report provides an in-depth examination of each curriculum’s components based on evidence-aligned practices. One of the reports’ unique strengths is their emphasis on identifying ‘red flag’ practices—those that do not align with the scientific evidence base. These reports are the only ones that prioritize identifying practices that could prevent students from developing skilled reading.
Led by Kari Kurto, TRL’s National Science of Reading Director, this project involved:
- Development of a reviewer workbook
- Research to affirm interrater reliability
- A pilot study
- Comprehensive training of numerous expert review teams
- Translation of the review data into detailed, comprehensive reports
- Transparent communication with publishers about our findings
Teams meticulously reviewed all instructional materials against the individual components within TRL’s Curriculum Evaluation Guidelines. These components are lifted directly from the scientific evidence base.
