The Reading League Wisconsin presents: The Power of Early Talk with Maura Moyle and Jill Gilkerson
In this session, Drs. Vroom and Zoleo provide an overview of the Hochman Method, an explicit set of specific writing strategies that teachers use in every grade and in all subjects, including ELA, social studies, science, world languages, and math. This evidence-based and proven instructional methodology enables students to master the skills that are essential if they are to become competent writers.
Educators, parents, and school leaders recognize the urgent need to support students in upper elementary, middle, and high school who struggle to read. Foundational skills knowledge is at the heart of this work and it is crucial to provide instruction that is research-based, respectful, dignified, and age-appropriate to this vulnerable group of students. In this session, Dr. Jennifer McMahon will discuss the reading research related to foundational skills instruction and the considerations essential for engaging and remediating the reading skills of older students. Participants will be provided with concrete examples of structured literacy lessons and with effective, evidence-based approaches for helping students master and apply critical reading skills.
