The Urgent Need to Support Older, Struggling Readers
Educators, parents, and school leaders recognize the urgent need to support students in upper elementary, middle, and high school who struggle to read. Foundational skills knowledge is at the heart of this work and it is crucial to provide instruction that is research-based, respectful, dignified, and age-appropriate to this vulnerable group of students.
In this session, Dr. Jennifer McMahon will discuss the reading research related to foundational skills instruction and the considerations essential for engaging and remediating the reading skills of older students. Participants will be provided with concrete examples of structured literacy lessons and with effective, evidence-based approaches for helping students master and apply critical reading skills. Please join us for what will be a powerful hour of learning!
