The Reading League NC & SC Summer Virtual Symposium
Join The Reading League North Carolina and South Carolina for our inaugural Summer Virtual Symposium, an exciting event focused on Research, Leadership, and Advocacy in Action!
Q & A with Dr. Louisa Moats
TRL-South Carolina brings you a virtual event with Dr. Louisa Moats. Dr. Moats will discuss structured literacy and the importance of teacher knowledge.
No Time to Waste: Structured Literacy for Young Adults
Participants will envision an evidence-based structured literacy program through the lens of an adolescent emerging reader. Aspects of leadership are discussed by a pioneering superintendent whose dedication to equity led to the first public high school structured literacy program in her state. Successful instructional approaches designed specifically for older students’ unique social and emotional needs are presented by a special educator. Outcomes and anecdotes are shared throughout the hour, painting a picture of our program’s emphasis on success and dignity. Reflections from adolescents highlight the central role reading plays in building belonging—inspiring educators and administrators to meet the needs of struggling older students with urgency, expertise, compassion, and joy.
Systematic and Explicit Teaching of the Foundational Skills Standards: Phonological Awareness, Phonics, and Sight Words
Hosted by Collaborative Classroom & The Reading League South Carolina, this professional learning experience focuses on the urgent need for high-quality foundational skills instruction. During this one-day, in-person event, participants will have the opportunity to hear from a national literacy leader, will learn how systematic decoding instruction and coordinated lesson structure accelerate student mastery, and will explore the consistent instructional routines that allow students to focus their attention on decoding to develop accuracy and automaticity.
Supporting Tomorrow’s Leaders Through Today’s Success
Join IDA-SC, in collaboration with The Reading League South Carolina, for a virtual fall conference with sessions from Dr. Hugh Catts and Laura Stewart.
Examining the Science of Reading Institute
Hosted by Collaborative Classroom and The Reading League South Carolina at the ETV Idea Lab in Columbia, SC. While educators have been debating the “right” way to teach reading for decades, student progress continues to lag. The science of reading is clear and our students deserve access to instructional practice that is rooted in the research. During this one-day, in-person professional learning experience, participants will have the opportunity to hear from a national literacy leader and explore best practices for aligning their work with the research.
